World Siberian Pictorial Biennale presents 65 works made by 14 authors from Russia, Ukraine and France. This exhibition gives an opportunity to see photos made by 13 historical different methods of getting images. The diversity of techniques and "the authors' authority" lets us understand "what is pictorialism now, 100 years after its flowering" and, perhaps, enlarge its present borders…
We should admit, that images made by man's hands has more affection, life, abundance of informational layers, primary and secondary messages, than pictures made by use of different technical means. An appearance of every new technology, from one side, gives an opportunity for more people to become familiar with the magic of visual images creation, from the other side, it limits the "transmitting" potential. Therefore, there is such a phenomena as "pictoralism" on every stage of technological advancement. It is an attempt to get the appearance of traditional visual arts. The original nature of photography always will be preserved in the basement of so called "pictorialistic" works, and these works will never become paintings, though they seems to be. And in my humble opinion we should value at first the photographic nature of these images.
